Learning Activities and Resources

At Home Learning Activities:

 

Language Arts

 

  • Read books
    • Practice turning pages in a book
    • Tracking words from left to right
    • Answering WH- questions about a story
    • Recalling events in the story
    • Labeling/identifying objects/pictures
    • Search for letters or known words

 

Writing

 

  • Practice writing or building names
  • Practice forming letters and numbers
  • Build letters and numbers with magnets, playdough, salt trays, shaving cream, paint, etc…

 

Mathematics

 

  • Practice rote counting out loud to 10 or higher
  • Practice identifying numbers using environmental print, ex.: use flashcards or objects with the print around your house on food boxes, bags or cans, appliances, the mail, newspapers, etc.)
  • Incorporate movement and count how many hops, jumping jacks, claps of hands, snaps of fingers, etc.
  • Use dominos to count the dots, dice, chips, checkers boards, board games, decks of cards, etc…
  • Count pieces of daily snack, ex.: goldfish crackers, pretzels, fruit chews, cheerios / cereal.

 

Circle Time

 

  • Have FUN!
  • This is a great time to incorporate language arts, math, communication and music and movement!
  • Count / identify numbers
    • Use a calendar to generalize and track from left to right then move to the next row (Starfall)
  • Sing ABC’s, identifying upper/lower case letters, letter sounds
  • Thinking of words that start with (__) letter
  • Identify / spell / write name
  • Sitting and attending to task skills
  • Read books! LOTS OF BOOKS!

 

Communication

 

  • Practice answering and asking questions
  • Take turns in conversation
  • Practice asking for wants and needs: Modeling sentences, expanding sentences, and being specific with descriptive words, ex., “help me” → “I need help please” or “Please help me open my snack”

 

Music and movement

 

 

Indoor & Outdoor play

 

  • Practice motor skills. ex.: Running, jumping, balancing, crawling like a crab or bear crawl (P.E. with Joe)
  • Following directions 
  • Explore and experiment
  • Share and take turns
  • Exchange dialog
  • Talk about what’s happening, , what your building or making, or use your imagination
    • ex. “What is your dinosaur doing?” ”Can you make tacos?”
  • Cooperative play
  • Dramatic Play or Imaginative Play
  • Clean up!
